The first project

• Bedrock Energy Centre, Municipality of Bluewater, Huron County
• 198-acre plant site on an existing Hydro One 500 kV corridor
• 1,300 megawatts of generation and storage on site
• Up to 1,000 megawatts of export capacity to the provincial grid
• A 500 megawatt connected campus served behind the meter
• Eight hours of long-duration storage; a three-day emergency reserve
• Phased 2029 to 2031

The storage

• Compressed air held in depleted gas reservoirs more than 500 metres down
• Reservoirs already exist: no cavern to excavate, the largest cost and schedule risk in competing designs
• De-designated from gas storage by the Ontario Energy Board in 2019
• Charged with electricity, discharged with stored heat; nothing burned
• First project of its kind in Canada; the technology has run abroad since 1978

What is still open

• Municipal support, which is mandatory for an IESO contract and which Bedrock does not hold
• The IESO connection study, now under way
• Environmental approval, well licensing and the regulatory pathway for air storage in these reservoirs
• An operator for the campus: in discussion, nothing signed
